The goal of this study was to examine whether or not clause type and structural position affect reader's interpretation of sentences, and if so, whether clause type or structural position is a stronger interpretive cue. Participants were exposed to sentences describing people with different personality traits and asked to rate how likable each character seemed. In order to track which structural position seemed more salient to participants, contradictory traits were placed at the beginning and end of each test item; in order to understand which clause type most influenced participant's interpretations, each test item contained a main clause in one half and a subordinate clause in the other. Below are four versions of an experimental item in which the same trait, cheerfulness, is presented in four different ways through clause and structural manipulation.
