In (1a) the "dislikable" adjective comes in the subordinate clause and a unstressed position, but the "likable" adjective comes in the main clause and the stress position. (1d) simply reverses the structural placement of the negative and positive adjectives. In (1c) the likable adjective is in the main clause, but the dislikable adjective comes in the stress position. (1b) reverses the structural location of the negative and positive adjectives. Because (1c) and (1b) contain a main clause cue for one adjective and a stress position cue for a different adjective, they raise the interesting question of whether clause or structural position is a stronger cue. Gopen (personal communication, 2003) believes that when structural position and clause cues conflict, stress position is a stronger cue.
