Stimuli. Participants were asked to complete a paper and pencil task. They were instructed to They were given test items describing men with both a "likable" and a "dislikable" trait. Likable and dislikable traits were taken from the 60 highest meaningful traits and 60 lowest meaningful traits on N. Anderson's 555-trait list (1968). Although the most likable traits were generally paired with the least likable traits, care was taken to avoid using total opposites such as "kind" and "unkind." Every test item contained both a main clause and a subordinate clause. The names for the characters in the sentences were selected from the Office of Social Security's records of most frequently used boys' names during the 1980's so that name familiarity would not be a confounding factor in the study. Names were given to the characters in the test items so that participants would not attribute all traits in every item to one character but would instead regard each sentence with its traits separately from the other sentences and traits. Sixty distracter items were created. Most contained two Anderson traits that were both ambiguous in meaningful-ness, were from the middle of his likability list, and were conjoined syntactically through the use of and, but, yet, or however. A few distracter items were simply a one-trait, one-clause statement.
