One must, however, take into consideration the limitations of this study in testing Gopen's theory of stress position. Gopen emphasizes context in his theory of stress position. Because items were only one sentence long and the sentences only contained two clauses, the experimental design gave subjects very little context upon which to base their scores. Gopen (1990, 2002) suggests that writers put backward linking contextual information at the beginning of their sentences and new and important information in the "stress position" at the end. Perhaps because these sentences did not occur in the midst of paragraphs or even with several clauses, readers weight the contextual beginning information more heavily than they might have otherwise done. Perhaps future studies could be done measuring reading times or tracking eye movement while manipulating stress positions in paragraphs. Perhaps Gopen's theory of stress position is related to what Kaan (personal communication, 2003) refers to as "wrap-up effects" at the end of sentences in moving window tasks that measure response times. Because the cognitive processes that take place during wrap-up effects are unknown, it could offer exciting opportunities for creative and original research in the field of psycholinguistics.
