The introduction of Book I, in which Milton sets the tone and purpose for his epic poem, is replete with notions of boundaries or the lack thereof. He frames his poem by first outlining the subject matter about which he will speak. That subject matter includes "the Heav'ns and Earth" (9) that "Rose out of Chaos" (10), which is shortly thereafter referred to as the "vast Abyss" (21). The boundary that separates the heavens from earth is such a universally understood notion that usually it becomes trite if used as an example of limits or boundaries. Milton, however, takes this basic concept in human thought and adds a nuance of complexity to this boundary by differentiating the heavens and earth from the limitless notion of chaos. He then builds upon this limitlessness by discussing God, who "from the first / Wast present" (19-20) and has the creative power to impregnate the abyss. God seems to exist outside the boundaries of time and seems to control even the boundless chaos. Milton invokes the Heavenly Muse, for his "advent'rous" (and ambitious) poem, for he "with no middle flight intends to soar" (14), but instead "pursues / Things unattempted yet in Prose or Rhyme" (16). He thereby pushes the boundaries of literary tradition and thought--something that all Miltonic scholars should recognize as a chief characteristic of John Milton.
