Throughout Paradise Lost, boundaries are essential to Milton's account of the actions and character of Satan. Shortly after first mentioning the devil, Milton relates how he was "Hurl'd… down / To bottomless perdition" (45, 47). While Satan's "Dungeon horrible" (61) did not have a bottom limit, it had twisted prison walls, as it "on all sides round / As one great Furnace flam'd" (61-62). The word hurled indicates a separation between heaven and hell, as does the description of Satan when Milton writes, "But O how fall'n" (84). This notion of "falling from grace" is prevalent throughout Christianity, and is used not only in reference to Lucifer but also in reference to sinful mankind. "Falling" implies that a clear boundary exists between good and evil, between heaven and hell.
