Milton returns yet again to his allusions of the limitlessness of chaos once Satan exits hell. He describes "the hoary deep, a dark/ Illimitable Ocean without bound, / Without dimension, where length, breadth, and highth, / And time and place are lost" (891-894). Chaos seems to be uncreated matter in this description. Milton's references to chaos and the way it borders hell, heaven, and earth seem to be attempts to understand the layout of the universe. The question of what the universe is and how it is laid out is an ageless one in human history and thus an appropriate one for Milton to be addressing in his epic poem.
