Whether this was accidental or not, I cannot say for certain (though I suspect Milton must have been aware of this), but Death first appears in Paradise Lost in line 666 of Book II. This number is referred to as the mark of the "beast," a satanic character in Revelations (13:18). Interestingly, preceding this passage in Revelations is an account of the fall of Satan. The disciple John writes, "…[T]hat ancient serpent, who is called the devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world-he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him" (Rev 12:9, English Standard Version).
