God goes on, however, to describe his relationship to that which is created by discussing boundaries. He states, "Though I uncircumscrib'd myself retire, / And not put forth my goodness, which is free / To act or not, Necessity and Chance / Approach not mee, and what I will is Fate" (170-173). In other words, though God may diminish his presence, he does not weaken himself. However, the boundary between himself and his creation is more than spatial / material / spiritual. It also seems to be a boundary of wills. How rigid is this boundary? asks radio-free Milton. If all that God wills is Fate, how can humans have any free will? Is free will free if it falls under the canopy of God's will? Can humans will something that is against God's will? Is everything that occurs the will of God? What is will of God, anyway? Milton's notion of boundaries in this passage is incredibly complex. The boundaries of space and of will between God and his creation seem set, according to God, but intellectually they are difficult to comprehend. Are boundaries really boundaries if they are intertwined? If nothing exists apart from God and all is created out of matter from which He claims to retract His presence, doesn't that either cast doubt on his omnipresence or on his goodness? If he is good, why does he let bad things happen? If he does not let bad things happen, then how is he in control?
