This concept of vision, or ability to see the difference between good and evil is another boundary that Milton explores in the poem. Adam believes that "Evil into the mind of God or Man / may come and go, so unapprov'd and leave / No spot or blame behind" (V, 117-119). He seems unable to detect evil, however. Indeed, before Adam and Eve eat of the tree of Knowledge, they seem to have no concept of evil. Yet, Milton takes this idea that they cannot know evil without eating the fruit and extenuates the concept to the point that they cannot truly know good either because they do not have the ability to discern the boundary between good and evil. Indeed, of the Tree of Knowledge Milton writes, "Knowledge of Good bought dear by knowing ill" (IV, 22). This brings back up the notion of freedom that is so closely linked to boundaries. Were Adam and Eve freer when they could not discern good or evil or when they have the knowledge to discern boundaries? Adam asks, "Tell, if ye saw, how came I thus, how here? / …Tell me, how may I know him, how adore, / From whom I have that thus I move and live, / And feel that I am happier than I know" (VII, 277, 280-282). Is Adam's happiness complete if he cannot fully appreciate it by seeing boundaries to be able to contrast it to something other than happiness? Can he truly be happy without knowledge?
